Palermo to Monreale: Bus 389 and Tickets

Monreale is a lovely little Sicilian town with a beautiful panoramic view over Palermo stretching out towards the sea. And it’s quiet — sometimes I go there just to sit in silence and enjoy a completely different atmosphere. The best part is that it’s very easy to get there.

The bus ride from Palermo to Monreale takes around 30 minutes, depending on traffic. You need bus 389, which leaves from Piazza Indipendenza, and you ride it all the way to the last stop. You should buy your ticket in advance, either at any tabaccheria in the city or at the large AMAT kiosk at the bus stop. I usually buy mine beforehand just to be safe. You need to validate the ticket on the bus using the machine. It will print the ticket’s validity period — 90 minutes. Sometimes there are ticket inspectors on this route who may also sell tickets, but not always, so you can still end up with a fine. I recommend getting on the bus with a ticket already in hand and not having to worry about it.

It’s also better to buy your return ticket in Palermo straight away. The bus back from Monreale leaves from the same place where you arrive and runs according to the timetable.

You can check the timetable on Google, but it’s usually a little inaccurate. I use the timetable I found at the bus stop near the station, and I’m sharing it with you.
